ABOUT THIS CHURCH
Comprising Stone, cobble and brick, St Nicholas overlooks the western approaches of the village. The blocked arch in the nave north of the chancel arch and blocked round-headed openings in the north wall are from the Norman church. The aisles and the nave were added in the c13. The north was widened in the late c14, dated from the perpendicular windows. The upper part of the tower was damaged by a storm in the late c14 was rebuilt with a broach spire. This was taken down in 1969. Look out for the c15 roof corbels in the south aisle with faces, foliage, fleur-de- lys and the C16-C17 wrought-iron hour-glass stand beside pulpit with hour glass in wooden holder.
